I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the biggest question every Christian asks is, “How do I know this is God’s plan for my life?”
We spend our lives seeking the will of God, submitting to his plan, living according to his purpose, not ours. We’re desperate to follow, to obey, to listen to his voice, but how do we know when it’s the voice of God or if it’s simply our human thoughts? How can we be sure that this is God’s will for my life and not my own selfish desires I’m pursuing? How can I tell if this is a normal life lesson I’m to learn from or punishment from displeasing God?
So, most of our days are spent in anguish and fear seeking a sign, any sign, from God to validate our decisions, because I can think of only ONE thing far worse than death. It’s hearing the words, “Depart from me. I never knew you.” after death.
We live in this continual state of spiritual schizophrenia, a vicious game of pinball, striking left and bouncing right. We live with a holy bipolar disorder. If only we could get a clear channel into the heart and mind of God.
Well, I’m going to strip it all down for you. There is a way to know if you’re living in God’s will and within 30 seconds of any given moment, of any given thought, or of any given decision, you will know without a doubt if it’s from God.
Are you ready? Here’s the sign you’ve been looking for.
I’m gonna start with math, but don’t worry there isn’t a test at the end.
In mathematics, there is something called Symmetric Equivalence Principle. Simply put, if a = b, then b = a. And we all know “=” means “is equal to”. To make it even more clear,
If 1 + 1 = 2, then 2 = 1 + 1
Basically, it doesn’t matter which side the equal sign the numbers are on. Flip it around all day long, the equation will always be true.
Stick with me on this, I’m now going to take this mathematical principle one step further.
In the Bible, 1 John 4:16 says, “God is love”.
Now, in mathematical terms,
God = love
Let’s apply the Symmetric Equivalence Principle:
If God = love, then love = God.
This. This is the foundation of deciphering the voice of God. This is the filter you run every thought, every action, and every decision through. Simply ask yourself, “Is this rooted in Love?”
Yes? Then, it’s of God. Go in peace.
No? Then, keep looking. Still, go in peace.
I know the definition of Love is just as convoluted as our definition of God. I know there are plenty of people who their perception of love is sick and twisted, as is many people’s perception of God is sick and twisted. So, how can I be sure this is Love and not my broken childhood view of Love?
Let’s strip away the half-truths and misunderstandings of Love.
1 Corinthians 13:
Love = patient
Love = kind
Love = rejoices in the truth
Love = no records of wrongdoing
Love = protects
Love = trusts
Love = hope
Love = preserves
There’s another mathematical principle that states,
If a = b and b = c, then a = c
Get where I’m going with this?
If God = love, and love = kindness, then, God = kindness.
Just go down the list.
Now, let’s finish 1 John 4:16:
Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.
I know I just threw a lot of math at you, but it boils down to this: You live in love. You live in God.
May your every prayer of every day simply be, “Is this rooted in Love?”
